NEWARK — 32BJ SEIU’s New Jersey State Director today called the creation of Jersey City Immigrant Affairs Commission a responsible and farsighted initiative that will strengthen the community.

“This is municipal government at its best,” Kevin Brown. “We’re proud that Jersey City is leading the way in recognizing the valuable contributions of its strong immigrant community, and working in a very proactive way to protect the rights of every city resident.”

32BJ SEIU firmly championed the measure, which passed city council unanimously last night. The nine-member commission will advise the mayor and council on immigration issues; monitor effects that federal, state and local laws have on immigrants and promote recognition of the contributions of immigrants to Jersey City.

“While some elected officials around the country are only now beginning to recognize the injustices faced by immigrants, Jersey City is helping to spearhead the movement toward justice,” Brown said.
