Jersey City, NJ – Developers for 70 & 90 Columbus (70 Columbus Urban Renewal LLC and 90 Columbus Urban Renewal LLC both owned by Ironstate Developers and Panepinto) and The Vantage (LNH Owner Urban Renewal owned by Fisher Development Associates) have reached an agreement with the City of Jersey City in regards to their violations of the city’s standard wage ordinance. These developers, which received Default Notices from the City of Jersey City for 70 Columbus, 90 Columbus and The Vantage in February of this year, agreed to pay a total of over $420,000 to remedy underpayments for wages and benefits. In addition, the agreement stipulated a one-time $25,000 payment to Javier Amador, a porter at the 70-90 Columbus, who was fired after complaining about wage theft. Javier delivered a petition to the building’s co-developer Ironstate seeking improved working conditions.
In February, workers got together in front of 70 Columbus to also demand these developers commit to good wages and benefits by ceasing to contract with irresponsible contractors in these buildings and throughout Jersey City.
“We applaud Mayor Fulop for standing up for working people and holding developers accountable” said SEIU 32BJ Executive Vice President and NJ State Director Kevin Brown. “We should not allow any developer who benefits from tax breaks to shortchange the workers by hiring low road, irresponsible contractors who do not comply with Standard Wage conditions.”
Under Mayor Fulop’s leadership as a member of the City Council, Jersey City was the first city in the state to pass a Standard Wage Ordinance for buildings that receive some types of tax abatements and other subsidies. This was an important step towards protecting Jersey City workers and creating a more equitable city for all.
With 175,000 members in 11 states, including more than 13,000 in New Jersey–32BJ SEIU is the largest property services union in the country.

“Aplaudimos al alcalde Fulop por defender a los trabajadores y responsabilizar a los desarrolladores”, dijo el vicepresidente ejecutivo de SEIU 32BJ y director estatal de NJ, Kevin Brown. “No debemos permitir que ningún desarrollador que se beneficie de exenciones fiscales defraude a los trabajadores mediante la contratación de contratistas irresponsables y de baja calidad que no cumplan con las condiciones del salario estándar”.
Bajo el liderazgo del alcalde Fulop como miembro del Concejo Municipal, Jersey City fue la primera ciudad del estado en aprobar una Ordenanza de Salario Estándar para edificios que reciben algunos tipos de reducciones de impuestos y otros subsidios. Este fue un paso importante para proteger a los trabajadores de Jersey City y crear una ciudad más equitativa para todos.
