The goal of 32BJ’s Labor Leaders of tomorrow Internship Program is to provide a meaningful experience for interns by fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment that empowers them to build on their existing skills and develop as future labor leaders. By working closely with 32BJ staff in their assigned department, interns will have the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals, gaining valuable mentorship, guidance, and hands-on skill-building opportunities. This experience will contribute to their growth within the labor movement, equipping them with the tools and knowledge to advocate for leadership, equity, and social change, while helping to create a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

Compensation and Details

This program will run for 10 weeks starting June 1st. This program is offered only at our NYC office location and daily attendance for the full duration of the program is required. Costs for relocating and housing are not offered. Participants will be compensated at $21 an hour.

Participating Departments Job Descriptions

CALL CENTER / MEMBER SERVICES

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn about member services by supporting the Call Center and Member Services teams in assisting union members.
  • Serve as a welcoming, first point of contact for members by phone and, at times, in person at union offices or worksites.
  • Assist with answering general questions related to workplace issues, dues, and benefits (training provided).
  • Help direct members to the appropriate union staff or department for additional support.
  • Assist with documenting member interactions and entering basic information into the union’s member tracking systems (CRM).
  • Support onsite member assistance, including helping with intake, sign‑ins, and follow‑up at union offices or events.
  • Learn how the union triages member concerns and coordinates services across departments.
  • Assist with preparation of materials, reference guides, and other resources used by Member Services staff.
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and special projects related to member support and engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Interest in labor rights, social justice, customer service, or nonprofit work.
  • Strong people skills, patience, and ability to listen and communicate clearly with others.
  • Comfort speaking with people one‑on‑one, both by phone and in person.
  • Willingness to learn new systems, processes, and information related to union work.
  • Ability to follow instructions, ask questions, and work as part of a team.
  • Basic organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with basic computer tools (email, data entry, and Microsoft Office).
  • Bilingual Spanish/English or another language is a plus but not required.
  • No prior call center, union, or customer service experience required—this role is designed as a learning opportunity.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with basic technical support for hardware and software.
  • Help set up and install new hardware and software.
  • Update IT documentation and troubleshoot logs.
  • Assist with user account management and permissions.
  • Support software updates, patches, and installations.
  • Manage IT asset inventory and equipment.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as filing and data entry.
  • Assist with other administrative tasks as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Familiarity with computer hardware, software, and network systems.
  • Familiarity with common operating systems and cloud platforms (e.g., Windows, macOS, Google Cloud).
  • Strong interest in learning and assisting with IT-related tasks.
  • Good communication skills and a team-oriented attitude.
  • Detail-oriented and able to follow instructions accurately.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to new technologies.
  • Previous experience in a clerical or administrative role is a plus but not required.
  • Basic knowledge of cybersecurity principles is a bonus but not required.
NY METRO / DISTRICT OPERATIONS

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide administrative and logistical support to Field staff across the NY Metro area.
  • Assist with planning, preparing for, and staffing union events, actions, rallies, and meetings.
  • Help coordinate event logistics, including materials preparation, space setup, sign‑in sheets, and follow‑up tasks.
  • Support Field staff with outreach preparation, including assembling packets, flyers, and event materials.
  • Assist with scheduling, calendars, and coordination for events held at NYC headquarters.
  • Provide on‑site and/or virtual support during actions, rallies, trainings, and other union activities.
  • Help track event participation, attendance, and basic outreach information.

Support general office administration, including filing, copying, data entry, and supply organization.

Collaborate with multiple teams to ensure smooth execution of events and campaigns.

Assist with special projects as needed in support of organizing and field operations.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

Strong interest in workers’ rights, labor movements, community organizing, or social justice.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to multitask and work in fast‑paced, changing environments.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Comfortable interacting with staff, members, and the public.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Willingness to assist at events outside regular office routines, including occasional evenings.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace preferred.

Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus.

POLITICAL

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in tracking and researching issues impacting the union and workers’ rights.
  • Help maintain records and manage correspondence related to political strategies and public policy initiatives.
  • Provide administrative support for campaign programs, including organizing and filing materials.
  • Coordinate logistics for political field activities ensuring all necessary materials are prepared and organized.
  • Assist in compiling reports and presentations for political outreach, including member engagement and advocacy efforts.
  • Provide clerical support for organizing member political engagement programs and training materials.
  • Manage databases and spreadsheets related to member participation, voter registration, and PAC sign-ups.
  • Compile and distribute briefings, newsletters, and educational materials on legislative and electoral efforts.
  • Assist with event planning, including preparing materials and coordinating schedules to ensure smooth execution of political engagement events.
  • Provide administrative support for communication between union officers, elected officials, and coalition partners.
  • Help monitor and update tracking systems for various political campaigns and initiatives.
  • Perform other clerical duties to support the union’s political and campaign efforts as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • 1+ years of experience in administrative support, organizing, or legislative work.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, including Excel, Word, and Google Sheets for tracking and organizing data.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities to manage various clerical tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with diverse stakeholders.
  • Basic understanding of political processes, with an interest in supporting electoral and policy campaigns.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and provide timely follow-up on assignments.
  • Fluency in written and oral Spanish preferred but not required.
RESIDENTIAL

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participation in contract, organizing, and social justice campaigns.
  • Assist with the documentation and tracking of members’ rights, responsibilities, and benefits.
  • Building one-on-one relationships with workers and establishing trust at residential buildings.
  • Assist with the development of current leaders as well as identifying, recruiting and onboarding new leaders.
  • Participation in broad and intensive outreach efforts to non-union workers.
  • Motivate individual workers and groups of workers to take collective public action.
  • Assist in recording workplace issues and ensure accurate and timely updates in the union’s grievance tracking system (CRM).
  • Help with the preparation and organization of reports, meetings, and other union-related documentation.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Interest in labor relations, social justice, or community organizing.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English or Albanian/English a plus.
  • Willingness to conduct house visits and site visits.
  • Strong verbal communication skills; ability to engage with people effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
SECURITY DIVISION

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn about union work by participating in contract, organizing, and social justice campaigns within the Security Division.
  • Support Field staff who work directly with Security Officers at worksites.
  • Help document and track basic information related to members’ rights, benefits, and workplace concerns.
  • Build respectful one‑on‑one relationships with workers and learn how organizers establish trust on the job.
  • Assist with outreach efforts, including talking with workers, helping distribute materials, and attending meetings or actions.
  • Support leadership development by helping identify and engage workers interested in getting more involved.
  • Help record workplace issues and assist with data entry in the union’s tracking systems (training provided).
  • Assist with preparing materials for meetings, trainings, and other union activities.
  • Attend site visits, actions, and events to observe and support organizing and contract enforcement work.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Interest in labor rights, social justice, community organizing, or related fields.
  • Willingness to learn and participate in field‑based work, including site visits.
  • Strong people skills and comfort talking with others one‑on‑one or in small groups.
