About 32BJ

With more than 185,000 members, we are the largest union of property service workers in the U.S.

Our Mission

Our union, 32BJ SEIU, has a dream where all workers have a path to a better life.  To reach that goal, we build power and transform lives by organizing across the sectors where our members work to win the wages, benefits, respect, and dignity they deserve.  We organize the unorganized and we harness the power of working people to drive meaningful change.

Powered by our member activists and leaders, we dream and deliver on campaigns that are both bold and ambitious – campaigns that challenge the status quo and uplift the lives of working people.

We stand as an independent and powerful force in the fight against corporate greed and to expand the rights of working people and their communities.  Since our founding in 1934, we have brought essential workers together across race and immigration status to break down systemic barriers and overcome the divisions of the day.  We unite to create a better tomorrow for all by building on the pillars of economic, social, racial and environmental justice.

Where We Are

We are concentrated in the Northeast – in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C. – but our reach extends to southern Florida and as far west as Montana.

What We Do

We work primarily as cleaners, property maintenance workers, doormen, security officers, airport workers, window cleaners, building engineers, and school and food service workers. But our ranks include railroad and factory workers as well.

Where We Work

We work for private employers, the public sector, and companies receiving government contracts. We work in office, apartment, and government buildings; airports and shopping malls; public schools, colleges, and universities; stadiums, theaters, museums, and country clubs.

Prominent sites where we work include the Empire State Building, Broadway theaters, and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum; the PATH train system connecting New York and New Jersey; the home stadiums of the New York Yankees and Mets, the New Jersey Devils, the Brooklyn Nets, and the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers; Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute; the Connecticut Capitol; and the U.S. State Department, CIA, and Pentagon in Washington.

Where We Come From

Our union includes the full breadth of America today. We are a diverse group in every way. We come from dozens of countries all over the world – and from families with long histories in the U.S. But we share the American Dream, a commitment to making life better for working families, and a fundamental respect for the dignity of all people.

Stronger Together

We are an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has 2.1 million members dedicated to raising industry standards, making life better for working families and our communities, and building a fair economy.
