Youth Will Hold Press Conference/Speak Out for WFMA,
Deliver Valentine’s to Supportive Elected Officials

BOSTON: On Thursday, February 13th at 10:30am, dozens of immigrant youth and the children of immigrants—including those who are undocumented or have Temporary Protected Status (TPS)—will hold a Valentine’s-themed press conference at 32BJ SEIU headquarters at 26 West Street in Boston for the Work and Family Mobility Act. Following the presser, the youth will lead a march to the State House, where they will deliver “Thank you” Valentines and treats to the legislators who are supportive of their cause, including members of the Transportation Committee who voted the WFMA bill out of Committee last Wednesday, February 5.
The young people will include 30-plus high school students—mostly those who emigrated from Brazil or whose parents did—traveling with their teacher from Martha’s Vineyard, along with middle-schoolers from East Boston with parents from El Salvador and other countries. They will be joined by immigrant workers with 32BJ SEIU and allies from the Driving Families Forward Coalition. The students will share the fear and pain of our state’s immigrant youth, including worries that their parents will be detained or deported every time they drop them off at school or drive themselves to work. Some of the high-schoolers are also old enough to qualify for a Massachusetts Standard driver’s license, but are unable to obtain one because of their immigration status.
If passed, the Work and Family Mobility Act would allow qualified, undocumented immigrants to obtain a standard Massachusetts Drivers’ License. Similar legislation has passed in 15 states and the District of Columbia. Allowing undocumented immigrants to drive legally has been shown to reduce hit-and-run incidents and improve overall road safety in several of these states.
The WFMA has cleared the Transportation Committee, and has a deadline of July 2020 for passage. The Driving Families Forward Coalition is excited about the recent victory, but building even more support is more urgent than ever as this deadline comes closer.

The Driving Families Forward Coalition, led by 32BJ SEIU and the Brazilian Workers’ Center, is made up of 200 endorsing organizations, businesses, faith leaders, and elected officials. The coalition is focused on passing the Work & Family Mobility Act by July 2020.
