32BJ Condemns President’s Threat to End Central American Aid and Close Borders

The following statement is attributable to Héctor Figueroa, President of 32BJ SEIU:

“President Trump’s patently counterproductive threats to cut off foreign aid to three Central American countries and to close the U.S.-Mexico border can only serve to exacerbate conditions that have forced families to seek asylum in the United States and worsen the humanitarian crisis at the border. The pain of these actions would extend from non-governmental agencies that would suffer cuts, to the residents of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, and finally to the Department of Homeland Security agents that the president has already overtaxed. The president’s callously restrictive policies and seemingly willful ignorance about the nature of migration demonstrate once again how the practice of racism thoroughly destroys both common decency and common sense.”
