Senate Democrats Must Advance Alternative Proposals to Keep Immigration in Budget Bill

32BJ SEIU’s Kyle Bragg: Senate Democrats Must Advance Alternative Proposals to Keep Immigration in Budget Bill

NEW YORK — Yesterday evening, the Senate Parliamentarian ruled against including a path to citizenship for immigrants without status in the budget reconciliation bill now before Congress. The following statement may be attributed to Kyle Bragg, President of 32BJ SEIU:

“As one of the nation’s largest unions with a majority-immigrant membership, we take the parliamentarian’s deeply disappointing decision not as a defeat but as another challenge to overcome. We are encouraged that Senator Schumer has promised to advance alternative proposals with the parliamentarian in the coming days and proud that 32BJ SEIU member Ana Rivera will speak together with SEIU Vice President Rocio Saenz and President Mary Kay Henry at the massive Welcome Back Congress march in Washington tomorrow. Our families, our workplaces and our economy need to allow citizenship for essential workers like Ana and other immigrants caught in legal limbo — like Dreamers and recipients of Temporary Protected Status — just as we need the reconciliation bill to support the care economy and take bold action on climate change to truly build back better than ever.”
