WHY: Rents in Chelsea have skyrocketed over the past few years, driving out long-time residents and putting local shops out of business. The High Line park has created beautiful views for luxury condo owners and big profits for developers, but workers in many of those buildings make far below what other doormen and porters make, and many go without any health care coverage. Community members, residents and workers are coming together to ask developers and businesses to sign a code of conduct that would ensure that new housing in the area include affordable units and that jobs created pay a decent wage.
