Majority-Immigrant Union Applauds Supreme Court DACA Decision

The following statement may be attributed to Kyle Bragg, President 32BJ SEIU:

“As one of the largest unions in the nation with majority-immigrant membership, we applaud the Supreme Court decision today to uphold the continuation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA.  By stopping President Trump’s attempt to end the legal standing of immigrants who came to this country as children, the Court has prevented nearly one million Americans from suddenly being stripped of their legal status and left open to deportation. Thanks to DACA, over 800,000 immigrants have become integral members of our communities across the country since 2012. Over 60,000 DACA recipients are now classified as essential healthcare workers, doing all they can to save lives during this pandemic. The court’s action protects not only their lives but the wellbeing of all those they serve.

President Trump’s racist, anti-immigrant policies have torn at this nation’s bonds and trampled its highest principles since his inauguration. Now, during one of the most calamitous moments of social unrest in our nation’s history, the Supreme Court has demonstrated the strength of our foundational principles of fairness, compassion and diversity. The brutal systemic racism and lethal inequality of our system still must be challenged and changed, and this crucial decision allows us to move forward in our fight to realize the nation of our dreams.
