32BJ SEIU Congratulates Sini, Curran and Long Island Progressive Candidates on Election Victories

Posted 11/8/17 | Filed in

NEW YORK – 32BJ members congratulate Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, Nassau County Controller Jack Schnirman and other progressive candidates who won their election in Long Island. In addition to these candidates, the union backed a host of legislators in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and other town officials.

In addition to Sini, 10 of the candidates the union endorsed in Suffolk County won their elections, including DuWayne Gregory for District 15 of the Suffolk County Legislature. Erroll Toulon, who would be the state’s first African American countywide sheriff, was leading with 100% of the precincts reporting, but the race had not been called.

In Nassau County, in addition to Curran, six of the candidates endorsed by 32BJ won their seats, including Kevan Abrahams for District 1 of the Legislature.

“Long Island voters spoke loud and clear at the ballot box about what matters to them most: progressive candidates who stand for workers’ rights, immigrant rights, affordable housing, good public education and combatting corruption,” said 32BJ President Hector Figueroa. “Our 32BJ members helped get out the vote for these candidates, to get a better future for their families and for all working Long Islanders. We look forward to a productive relationship with our new officials in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.”

Throughout election season, dozens of union members knocked on hundreds of doors, made calls and hit the streets to elect these candidates. Our get-out-the-vote efforts included mail and phone calls to 1,400 32BJ members living in Nassau County and Suffolk Counties and in-person contact with thousands of voters in several locations on the Island in the final three weeks leading up to Election Day.
