Growing Stronger in the Garden State

32BJ has grown dramatically in New Jersey over the past five years, in size and strength. The latest three-year contract raises wage and benefit standards for commercial cleaners, helping New Jersey members and their families move one step closer to attaining the American Dream.

2001

  • Average wage: $5.50/hour
  • Health care: None
  • Members: 1,000

2006

  • Wages: up to $11.75/hour
  • Health care: Family health coverage for full time workers
  • Immigrant worker protections
  • Members: 6,000

32BJ members led a successful campaign to raise standards for building service workers in the public sector. On January 12, 2006, Governor Codey signed a prevailing wage law, which establishes prevailing wages and benefits for workers in state-owned or leased buildings.

New Jersey members also use their collective strength in politics by voting for elected officials who support issues important to working families.

Through new organizing campaigns and a recent merger with the Philadelphia building services local, 32BJ is expanding into southern New Jersey, Philadelphia suburbs and the Delaware Valley.
