Four-hour security awareness training curriculum
Introduction / Pre-Test (20 minutes)
The student is introduced to the role of the building service worker in the safety and security of residential buildings.
Observation Skills (25 minutes)
In this lesson, the building service worker is presented with recommendations on improving observation skills in order to critically observe and record. Students are instructed in techniques to improve their senses while performing their daily duties. The role that observation plays in deterring criminal activity is also stressed.
Communication (25 minutes)
The ability to effectively communicate with tenants, visitors, co-workers, supervisors, and emergency response personnel is crucial to the role of a building service worker in keeping a building safe as well as tenant relations. In this lesson, the student is presented with the various components of effective communication (written and verbal), change of shift responsibilities, and notifications to the proper authorities.
Access Control (25 minutes)
In this lesson the access of people and packages to a building is discussed as well as hardware and technology. This lesson discusses the importance of procedure and personnel in limiting access to and from a building and how technology can augment these roles.
Indicators of a Terrorist Event (25
minutes)
The student is given an overview of the elements that lead to a terrorist event with a focus on the situations where a building service worker may have an opportunity for intervention. The student is encouraged to focus on behavior, and not people. The identification of fraudulent documents is discussed as an important element in countering potential terrorist activities.
Role of a Building Service Worker
at the Scene of an Emergency (30 minutes)
The building service worker has a very important role during an emergency in his or her building. In this lesson, the chain of command and understanding one’s role is discussed. The student will understand the importance of teamwork during emergency situations. They will also learn what information is crucial to communicate to emergency response personnel with an overview of fire safety and fire extinguishers.
Weapons of Mass Destruction (25 minutes)
The topic of weapons of mass destruction is presented with the objective of identifying the potential release, dissemination, or detonation of these potentially deadly agents. Information on limiting exposure to the elements is reviewed.
Suspicious Packages and Bomb Threats
(25 minutes)
Substantial time is committed to discussing conventional explosive devices and improvised explosive devices, as well as the way to handle a report of a “suspicious package” or a bomb threat.
Emergency Kits (20 minutes)
The psychological effect of emergency preparedness is discussed. The importance of family home preparedness is covered. . . The student will learn what should be in a go-bag and receive an overview of “shelter-in-place”.
Summary / Post Test (20 minutes)
