STAMFORD, Conn.
Authorities say a last-minute deal appears to have averted a janitors' strike that could have affected scores of businesses in Fairfield County and Westchester County, New York.
The 4,000 office cleaners, who are members of the Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ, will vote on the four-year contract proposal within the next few weeks.
The deal, which came three days before their strike deadline, is between their union and a group of cleaning companies for which they work. It includes pay raises and better health benefits for part-timers, and would replace a contract expiring Monday.
The union says unionized members clean about 90 percent of large office space in downtown Stamford.
