Janitors at Nova win Labor Board hearing

Published: September 4, 2008

The National Labor Relations Board has set a hearing to determine if Nova Southeastern University treated contracted janitors unfairly.

The hearing is set for 10 a.m. Nov. 17 at the National Labor Relations Hearing Board Room of the Federal Building, 51 SW First St., Miami.

The Service Employees International Union charges that management at the Davie school threatened and disciplined off-duty workers who tried to pass out union literature on campus. The workers are employed by Massachusetts-based UNICO Service Co., which provides janitorial and landscaping services. "Employer threats and intimidation have no place in the work site," said Rob Schuler, who represents the union.

A Nova Southeastern spokeswoman could not be reached.
