NEW YORK – Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto and the New York Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher have been chosen by fans for the final roster spots for Tuesday’s All-Star game in Anaheim.
Votto earned the 34th and final spot on the NL roster by beating out Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, Colorado outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and Atlanta closer Billy Wagner in a four-day Internet vote. Padres reliever Heath Bell was a candidate before being named as an injury replacement on the NL squad.
Swisher edged out Boston first baseman Kevin Youkilis for the final AL spot.
He also was competing against White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko, Texas third baseman Michael Young and Minnesota outfielder Delmon Young.
Protesters lobby to keep 2011 All-Star Game in Phoenix: At New York, pro-immigration groups gathered outside Major League Baseball headquarters in Manhattan on Thursday to protest keeping the 2011 All-Star Game in Phoenix.
Demonstrators said the game should be moved from Arizona in opposition to the state’s strict new immigration law, signed in April. The statute, SB 1070, requires police, while enforcing other laws, to ask about a person’s immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally.
“It goes against the core of who we are as a country,” Hector Figueroa, secretary treasurer of immigrant labor union 32BJ, said of the Arizona law.
Organizers played “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and the national anthem. Participants carried signs such as “Steal bases, not civil liberties” and “Take me out to the ball game, don’t check my papers first.”
Commissioner Bud Selig repeatedly has said the game will remain in Phoenix. MLB had no comment on Thursday’s events.
Ramirez added to home run derby: At New York, Florida shortstop Hanley Ramirez has been added to the Home Run Derby during the All-Star break.
The 2009 NL batting champion will participate in his first derby Monday in Anaheim, Calif.
Ramirez had 13 home runs entering the Marlins’ game Thursday night at Arizona.
Ramirez joins Milwaukee’s Corey Hart and St. Louis’ Matt Holliday from the National League.
AL representatives include Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera, Boston’s David Ortiz and Toronto’s Vernon Wells.
One more player from each league is needed to round out the field.
