NEW YORK - A total of 30,000 workers in apartment buildings in New York City won a four-year tentative agreement early yesterday that provides almost 10% in wage increases, maintains the family health insurance and retirement benefits safe.
Carlos Pellecier, 50, who has spent 29 years as a doorman at 1380 Riverside Drive in Manhattan, yesterday celebrated the signing of a new contract between the union 32BJ and the Realty Advisory Board, RAB, not so much by the 10% wage increase but by health benefits.
"When you start getting old diseases and medical appointments, and everything comes up which is very expensive today," said the doorman.
The signing of the contract, which includes $ 547 million in wage and benefit increases, avoiding a strike that would affect more than 3,200 buildings.
"The contract is an important victory to keep New York a place where working people can call home," said Mike Fishman, president of 32BJ.
The four-year agreement between Local 32BJ and the Realty Advisory Board (RAB) maintains benefits including sick days, overtime, holidays and increases employer contributions to health by almost 20% ($ 182 million) and pension more than 20%.
