32BJ SEIU, which wants the City Council to make developers pay prevailing wages to building-services workers at city-subsidized projects, are hailing a new Pittsburgh law that does just that. The law, which passed Friday, is the first of its kind in the nation. “Cities around the country should follow Pittsburgh's lead and get out of the business of creating poverty jobs,” says 32BJ President Mike Fishman. A similar bill introduced earlier this month by Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito, D-Manhattan, has 23 co-sponsors and is the union's top council priority.
