On Monday, City Comptroller William Thompson participated in 32BJ’s “Walk a Day in My Shoes” event, where the mayoral candidate spent the workday and had dinner with a city-contracted security officer to “see firsthand how hard it is for working New Yorkers to get by in the city,” according to organizers.
Thompson began his “walk” by meeting Lateef Rivers at his jobsite at the Brooklyn Municipal Building. Rivers, 25, is an AlliedBarton security officer who lives in Brooklyn. Rivers said he earns $11.75 an hour and has no benefits or health insurance. Thompson observed Rivers as he worked: screening and monitoring visitors as they entered the facility. Lateef has worked with AlliedBarton for more than two years and said to make ends meet, he lives with seven roommates.
“Walk a Day in My Shoes” is a process 32BJ is asking all citywide candidates looking for the union’s endorsement to take part in. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is also scheduled to “walk” with a security officer in the next few days.
