Security officers face unfair treatment, and over the last four years, 32BJ SEIU, which represents mostly these Black and Latino workers, has been trying to organize the more than 60,000 New York City security officers. These workers are guarding billion dollar corporations, businesses of every size and developments owned by foreign companies.
If multimillion-dollar-a year real estate industry paid security officers the same wages and benefits it has agreed to pay janitors, it would bring estimated millions of dollars in fair wages for these men and women. These men and women earn poverty wages and few benefits. The recent 32BJ MLK, Jr./inauguration gathering was a widely supported event. There are other actions in the planning stages.
