Developer Larry Silverstein has promised that all security officers in his World Trade Center office towers will be union members – specifically members of 32BJ SEIU.
“Our company has always worked closely with organized labor,” Silverstein said in a statement. “Now, with this agreement, we will ensure that the work of keeping the new buildings safe and secure will be performed by union workers.”
There are 10 security officers at 7 World Trade Center and about 10 others at other Silverstein Property buildings.
Silverstein has contracted with Advantage Security, which in turn reached a deal with 32BJ.
As a result, they say, security officers will get health insurance and special security training.
“By using professionally trained union security officers at the World Trade Center, Silverstein Properties is doing right by the officers, its tenants and all New Yorkers,”
Mike Fishman, President of 32BJ, said in a statement.
