NEW YORK, NY December 13, 2007 —The city's doormen, janitors, and building workers say they'll go out on strike in if they don't get a raise.
REPORTER: They say building owners have enjoyed a dramatic upturn in the real estate market, but wages haven't kept pace. Union president Mike Fishman marched with thousands of members yesterday in midtown and took a vote.
FISHMAN: All in favor of giving the committee the power to call a strike, say "I.” Any opposed, say "No," I haven't heard the no - we don't need a no. Brothers and sisters, you have given the committee the power to call a strike and we are ready.
REPORTER: Local 32 BJ represents 26,000 workers. Realty Advisory Board president James Berg says the employees are the highest paid in the country, and that negotiations will determine what is a fair wage. Commercial office cleaners currently make about $19 an hour. The last time building workers went out on strike was in 1996. Negotiations are scheduled to resume on Monday.
