Back in 2006, cleaners at the University of Miami held a nine week strike claiming unfair labor practices, substandard pay, lack of health benefits and workplace safety issues. The strike ended with their first union contract. The contract is set to expire August 31st, and once again University of Miami cleaners and landscapers cannot come to an agreement over their contract with the university. The workers voted on Saturday to strike if their demands are not met and their contract is not renewed by the time the old one expires. The negotiating committee is asking for raises and improved benefits for the workers and will continue to negotiate until they reach an agreement or the contract expires on August 31st, whichever comes first. I will keep you posted on the outcome.
