What seemed impossible, and after weeks of negotiations, Local 32BJ won a contract catalogued as historic benefiting more than 7,000 workers cleaning in the area of Montgomery, Baltimore and the District of Columbia.

The new contract lasts for four years which guarantees wage increases highest in history and medical coverage for workers and their families.

"These wage increases represent over 100 million dollars that will go to the pockets of workers. For workers in Baltimore and Montgomery represents an increase of 7 percent, and for workers in DC means an increase of 6 percent which means that if you currently earn 9.75 per hour over four years will end receive approximately 12.20 dollars per hour " explains Jaime Contreras, director of the metropolitan Local 32BJ.

As part of the agreement has been achieved that employers provide all workers of Montgomery County and Baltimore drug coverage with a prescription for the whole family, as well as plans for dental and optical benefits. While workers in Washington DC they are offered health insurance now with the new contract has been lowering the share of co-payment for medical care and for the first time part-time workers receive life insurance and drug benefits for the whole family, as well as dental and optical benefits.

With regard to the holiday ensured that employers recognize up to two weeks' paid leave.

On the other side was also standardize the date of completion of the contract which will enable future negotiate more effectively.

"Now all the contracts, Washington DC, Baltimore and Montgomery are due on October 15, 2011 which gives us a lot of power because we can all fight together for the same rights. For example, the contract expired yet Washington DC in May, which prevented us from going on strike together, but now all fight together, "says Contreras.

Workers in VA

Another of the victories was that the Association of Contractors Cleaning Commercial Buildings, the organization with which they had signed the contract on behalf of the major commercial cleaning companies in the area, has agreed to recognize the unionization of workers in Virginia.

The only condition is that 60 percent of cleaners demonstrate their interest to unionize to be recognized and then get the same benefits who have their peers in DC, Montgomery and Baltimore.

"Currently, a worker cleaning in Virginia earn an average of 6.75 dollars per hour worked to achieve unionization start with a base salary of $ 8 hour with an annual increase of 0.50 cents per year and would come into force on January 1, 2009 , "says Contreras.

For his part the president of Local 32BJ, Mike Fishman, said, "These agreements provide substantial increases in wages and benefits which will help to workers cleaning out of their poverty."

As part of the agreement has been achieved that employers provide all workers of Montgomery County and Baltimore drug coverage with a prescription for the whole family, as well as plans for dental and optical benefits.
