32BJ and the Community Service Society (CSS) have come together to sponsor a series of forums with Presidential candidates on poverty and the working poor called "Working Cities".
We are more convinced than ever that government, business, labor unions and community organizations must work together to stem the rising tide of poverty in urban America. The challenges confronting the poor are not unique to New York City, but prevalent in large cities such as Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C, and smaller cities such as Newark and New Haven and around the country.
Therefore, we believe that the poverty issue should be raised and discussed with the presidential candidates well before the politics of the 2008 primary season commences. The anti-poverty community, as well as the business community and government officials, should have an opportunity to solicit and scrutinize the views of these candidates seeking our support for their presidential bids. To foster candid and constructive sessions that produce serious discussion rather than sound-bites, the series is closed to the news media.
