City Council members and parents gathered to support New York City public school cleaners at a rally on June 19, 2008. Already working through shortages of staff and supplies brought on by previous budget cuts, New York City public school cleaners shared their concerns about maintaining safe and healthy environments at public schools.
Five budget cuts in the past six years have already forced cleaners to maintain schools with 800 fewer cleaners, and further cutbacks estimated to be as much as $21 million, could cost another 600 jobs, could lead to unsanitary conditions in the schools that may ultimately affect children’s health.
