POSITION OF 32BJ ON...

...Defeat of Immigration Bill in the Congress

Senate Failure on Immigration Reform Will Have Serious Consequences on Cities and Towns, and for Immigrant Families

The following statement is attributable to Mike Fishman, 32BJ President:

“The Senate’s failure to fix our badly broken immigration system means that local elected officials will continue to take immigration matters into their own hands.  As seen in Morristown, NJ, Hazelton, PA, Suffolk County and countless other cities and towns, the results are often divisive, discriminatory and damaging to our communities and to immigrant families.  Senate Republicans have failed immigrant workers and the American people, particularly the 12 million immigrants already here who will be further targeted and persecuted.

“Today’s vote is not a vote to preserve the status quo, it’s a vote that will make an already bad system worse.”

With more than 85,000 members in six states and Washington, D.C., the majority of whom are immigrant workers, 32BJ is the largest property services union in the country.

...Impact of Immigration Crisis on Cities and Towns

The following statement is attributable to Hector Figueroa, 32BJ Secretary-Treasurer:

“The recent antics by local and federal officials - from deputizing local police officers in Morristown, NJ, to the horrific raids that ripped apart families in New Bedford, MA - are not a solution to the immigration crisis. They are meant to instill fear in communities where immigrants live and work and do nothing to address the problems with the broken immigration system. Today we call on our elected officials - especially the White House and Congressional Republicans - to get serious about passing a realistic and bipartisan bill this year that will provide a path to citizenship for hard working, tax paying immigrants, reunite families, create an orderly system for future immigrants and ensure workplace and civil rights for all workers. Americans are ready for comprehensive immigration reform that is in line with our economic needs and our humanitarian values.”
