32BJ, Elected Officials Support Office Cleaners on Wall Street
In the heart of the financial district, 20 office cleaners faced a dilemma – to be unemployed or to continue their work for less than half the pay. It was a lose-lose situation for office cleaners at 123 William Street.
With only a day’s notice, the office cleaners learned that the building manager, AM Property Holding Corporation, was replacing its responsible cleaning company with Servco Industries. Under the new company, their salaries have been slashed from at least $20.25 an hour to $7.50 an hour, their hours have been cut and their family health insurance and other benefits stripped.
With the support of 32BJ members, elected officials and religious leaders, these office cleaners are fighting to bring their union jobs back – with the wages and benefits that allow them to provide for their families.
