Workers cite unfair labor practices by American
Painting
and Janitorial Co.
On Tuesday, July 10, janitors employed by American Painting and Janitorial Co., who clean commercial office buildings in Northern Virginia, walked off the job in protest of unfair labor practices committed by their employer. Last month 32BJ launched a Northern Virginia organizing drive involving more than 5,000 janitors, most of whom are Hispanic immigrant workers earning as little as $6.50 per hour with no meaningful benefits. That’s one-third less than their counterparts in Washington, DC, who are members of 32BJ and earn wages from $9 to $10 per hour.
