Security officers who protect City run homeless shelters protested at City Hall March 5th demanding that Mayor Nutter restore their full wages and health care. The Mayor’s decision came March 1st when the city abandoned its contract with private companies protecting the shelters, forcing the workers to either accept a wage of $9 an hour with no benefits or lose their jobs.

“Cutting our pay in half when everything is getting more expensive is going to kill us,” said Malhon Sutton, a Scotland Yard officer who’s worked at City shelters for five years...

Officers protecting shelters are attacked and forced to confiscate drugs and weapons on a daily basis. A recent stabbing at the Outley House Shelter left the victim in critical condition. (read entire press release)
