Six former cleaners testified before a judge in Miami that they were fired because they sought to form a union at Nova Southeastern University.
The trial comes two years after charges were filed in 2007, when Nova responded to workers' efforts to form a union by terminating their employer's cleaning contract abruptly, ending a decade-long relationship with UNICCO Services. Over 100 workers lost their jobs and many of them are still unemployed.
32BJ SEIU seeks back pay plus compounded interest for those workers, as well as their reinstatement and union bargaining rights. A previous case involving Nova found that the university itself violated labor laws during the 2006 union organizing campaign.
