Raising the standard for good working conditions is like a chain reaction. More people will see their work life can be better.

It’s been an honor

By Mike Fishman

Today is my last day as President of 32BJ SEIU. Serving as your president for 12 years has been my greatest honor, and I thank you for the opportunity. We have done incredible work together: our local has doubled in size, we continue to win strong contracts, we’ve organized with thousands of workers to win decent wages and benefits and opportunities for a better life, and we elect and hold accountable those committed to policies for working people. Our voice is stronger and louder than it’s ever been.

In May, I was honored to be elected by the 2.2 million members in our parent union as Executive Vice President of the Service Employees International Union. This country faces incredible challenges, which is why I am glad to continue the fight in my new role with the spirit, vision and energy of 32BJ in my heart and at my back. I know we will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder as we take on these tough times and move forward together for a more secure future for all working people.

I will miss our local’s camaraderie and spirit. I leave with great pride, though, for the strong union we have built together and the smooth transition we have made to our new leadership. Join me in celebrating 32BJ’s new president, Héctor Figueroa, and his team of officers and leaders. See you in the streets!
