Immigrant workers in New Jersey have had to fend off consistent attacks targeting their communities since President Trump took office in January. Now as Congressional leaders prepare to vote on funding the federal government, it’s clear that many Republicans on the Hill don’t have the best interests of working people at heart.
The budget shows that the GOP has the wrong priorities. The budget includes funding for the wall and anti-immigrant enforcement measures including hiring thousands more ICE agents, yet cuts Medicare, Medicaid, and other vital programs.
Sunday’s Star-Ledger editorial said it best: “Trump’s latest actions – killing the subsidies that help low-income people afford insurance, and opening up the market to junk plans – are his most significant yet to sabotage the health law.”
SEIU members and our allies continue to fight back against these efforts, just as we have stymied attacks on healthcare, immigration and other issues before.
Tomorrow, Congress will vote on a tax plan that cuts costs for millionaires by gutting basic living standards for all. As they do this, we will join together to raise our voices on the need to create good jobs and help working Americans thrive – without wasting one penny on tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires and corporations.
We need Senators Menendez and Booker and our Congressmen and women in the House to reject the GOP budget that guts Medicare, Medicaid, nutrition assistance, job assistance and infrastructure programs in favor of tax cuts for the wealthy. Our members know how their communities will suffer if these cuts to vital services are made. Our tax dollars are better spent on education, healthcare and supporting working families.
