Mayoral candidates Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Comptroller Bill Thompson participated in 32BJ’s “Walk a Day in My Shoes” event as part of the union’s 2009 New York City endorsement process. The event featured 32BJ security officers Lateef Rivers, 25, and Annie Davis, 54, who allowed the two top contenders to follow them throughout their day at home and at work.

Mike Fishman, President of 32BJ, said “walking a day with security officers provided both mayoral candidates with a glimpse into the lives of average New Yorkers. Anyone who wants to lead our City should know first-hand how working people get by each day.”

Walk With Lateef Rivers
In April, Thompson shadowed Lateef Rivers on the job at the Brooklyn Municipal Building as he scanned visitors through the checkpoints. Thompson also visited Lateef’s home in Brooklyn, where the two shared dinner and conversation.

Walk With Annie Davis
In May, Bloomberg visited Annie Davis’ Brooklyn home, which she shares with her daughter and two grandchildren, for breakfast. Afterwards, the Mayor shared the commute to her job guarding the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in Manhattan. Annie took Bloomberg on a tour of the facility and allowed the mayor to shadow her as she screened visitors.
