The following statement can be attributed to Mike Fishman, President of 32BJ SEIU:
The Occupy Wall Street protest and similar actions in other cities stem from a deep and growing frustration shared by many people about the state of our economy and our country. We all saw that when our economy fell apart, the burden fell straight onto the backs of working people. We have watched as many of our largest corporations post huge profits while workers lose their pensions, health care, and jobs. We have seen the very wealthiest Americans benefit from generous tax breaks as working families lose ground. Now Americans must join together to restore fairness to our economy and rebuild our middle class. 32BJ supports Occupy Wall Street in its demand for an economy that works for all Americans.
This is what democracy looks like, and we will help in their efforts to stand up for the interests of all Americans and to make the voices of everyday people heard.
With more than 120,000 members in eight states and Washington, D.C., 32BJ is the largest union of property service workers in the country.
