32BJ ENDORSES MOYA FOR ASSEMBLY

– Union Commits to Member Mobilization and Voter Outreach to Support Campaign –

Queens, NY– 32BJ today announced its endorsement of Francisco Moya for State Assembly in District 39 in Queens. This endorsement follows the union’s successful effort to get out the vote for Senator José Peralta’s special election in the 13th Senate District, which includes the 39th Assembly District. 32BJ joins progressive leaders from Queens, including Council Members Danny Dromm and Julissa Ferras, and State Senator José Peralta, in endorsing Moya.

“Working families in Queens and across New York need leaders like Francisco Moya in Albany,” said Mike Fishman, 32BJ President - the largest private sector union in the state. “32BJ is ready to mobilize to elect Moya and other candidates who will make sure Albany’s working for working people.”

With 70,000 members in New York, 32BJ is known for its strength in mobilizing members and voters to support endorsed candidates. During the 2008 state elections, the union spent more than $350,000 in ads and direct mail in key races. In addition, hundreds of members volunteered to speak with voters about the union’s endorsed candidates.

In the March special election, six 32BJ members worked full-time to talk to union members about Peralta’s candidacy in the 13th Senate District. Over the course of two weeks, the team has knocked on 1400 member doors and made 1551 phone calls to members. In addition, the union spent more than $12,000 on mailers and phone calls to membership in the district and nearly $50,000 in an independent expenditure to reach voters.

The union’s member-driven endorsement process is currently underway, and additional endorsement announcements are expected in the upcoming week. The union previously announced endorsements of Senator Schneiderman for Attorney General and Assemblyman Gianaris for State Senate.

This election work is part of 32BJ’s “State that Works” program - a policy agenda focused on creating good jobs and an affordable state through economic development, contracting and tax abatement programs. 32BJ will be continuing its efforts to elect candidates supportive of the State that Works in the fall elections.

With more than 120,000 members in seven states and Washington, DC, including 70,000 in New York, 32BJ is the largest property services union in the country.
