STATEMENT ON E-VERIFY VOTE IN STATE HOUSE

“Divisive enforcement-only measures like E-Verify misuse taxpayer dollars and spread fear in our communities,” said Gabe Morgan, 32BJ Western Pennsylvania Director. “They also scare immigrants, making them less likely to report real crimes. These measures haven’t worked in other places, and they won’t work in Pennsylvania.”

“Undocumented immigrants are workers and taxpayers, not criminals. They live in our communities and contribute to our economy. They clean our buildings, take care of our children and elderly and too often are exploited by irresponsible employers.”

With more than 120,000 members in eight states, 32BJ is the largest property service workers union in the country.

E-Verify allows employers to run a worker’s information against Department of Homeland Security and Social Security databases. Critics of E-Verify say it is inaccurate and creates hardships for workers and businesses.
