Newark, NJ—The following statement can be attributed to Kevin Brown, NJ State Director of 32BJ SEIU. 32BJ endorsed Councilman Baraka, and unleashed an unprecedented effort in the city of Newark to help him and other pro-worker candidates win their elections.
“32BJ SEIU congratulates Ras Baraka for his decisive victory last night. He has been a strong advocate for Newark’s working families, and as a councilman, he will continue to serve, along with recently reelected Mayor Booker, as a voice for the city’s workers.”
Brown continued, “I look forward to standing with Councilman Baraka to help create good jobs in Newark and to ensure that the laws in place to protect workers—such as prevailing wage standards—are enforced.”
32BJ members knocked on thousands of doors to get out the vote for Baraka and other council candidates. It was the union’s biggest effort to date for a city council race. The get-out-the-vote drive is part of a growing state-wide program to help elect pro-worker, pro-good jobs candidates.
With 120,000 members on the East Coast—including 8,500 in New Jersey—32BJ is the largest property services union in the country. It is one of the fastest growing unions in the state.
