New York, NY – After a membership-driven six month endorsement process involving candidate interviews, policy briefings and a commitment to the union’s “New Deal” policy agenda, 32BJ endorsed today Fernando Cabrera for Council District 14. This follows the union’s May endorsements of Ruben Diaz for Bronx Borough President and seven incumbent City Council members from the Bronx.
“New Yorkers need a New Deal – a set of public policies that will help create good jobs and keep our City vibrant and affordable,” said Mike Fishman, President of 32BJ. “These candidates have demonstrated both the leadership and the commitment to making this City work for working families.”
The union also announced its endorsement of Mayor Michael Bloomberg for re-election citing his record on creating good jobs, support for raising security industry standards and launching a Green Building initiative.
Cabrera is challenging Councilwoman Maria Baez in Council District 14, which includes the neighborhoods of Fordham, Kingsbridge, Morris Heights and West Bronx. In May, 32BJ announced endorsements for City Council incumbents Oliver Koppell for Council District 11; Larry Seabrook for Council District 12; James Vacca for Council District 13; Joel Rivera for Council District 15; Helen D. Foster for Council District 16; Maria Del Carmen Arroyo for Council District 17; and Annabel Palma for Council District 18.
As part of its ongoing political program, 32BJ intends to mobilize thousands of members to turn out Bronx voters in support of these candidates for the City’s primary and general elections.
With more than 70,000 members in New York City, including over 15,400 who live in the Bronx, 32BJ is the largest property service union in the country.
