AvalonBay – Not Right for New York

AvalonBay has shown communities that it does not always put the concerns of neighborhoods and families first, and at new developments, working families are voicing their concerns.

In New York City, working families are weighing in against AvalonBay’s bid for the Hunters Point middle-income housing development in Queens. And on Long Island, the Huntington Town Board recently voted against the rezoning that would have made way for a new AvalonBay housing development.

Concerns about AvalonBay include:

Safety issues
In Massachusetts, less than 18 months after AvalonBay was fined for a serious safety violation by the federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), a carpenter was killed while working on the construction of another AvalonBay development.

Undercutting working families
In New York City, AvalonBay is raking in the rent from its new luxury residential towers while denying the workers who keep the buildings running affordable health care for their children.  And in Massachusetts, Avalon Bay’s contractors paid tens of thousands of dollars in fines and back-wages after the Attorney General reached settlements with the contractors.

Limiting access for people with disabilities
AvalonBay is facing a lawsuit from the US Attorney’s Office for a Manhattan development without access for people with disabilities, and AvalonBay has agreed to inspect 100 other properties across the country where similar issues with accessibility may also exist.
